The hi-fi market is still dominated by analog devices, although nowadays almost all audio material is mixed digitally and sold in this form. With analog devices, the signal is ‒ unsurprisingly ‒ processed and transmitted in analog form. This inevitably leads to a degeneration of the audio signal, which reduces the listening pleasure.
Digital signal transmission solves precisely this problem. Its decisive advantage is that the signal is transmitted without loss. The original signal is therefore perfectly preserved ‒ bit for bit!
We speak of a fully digital hi-fi system when the audio signal is transmitted digitally throughout from the source to the loudspeaker. This is the only way to fully exploit the potential of digital audio!
Digital speakers
For a fully digital hi-fi system, you need speakers with a digital input. Many active loudspeakers have such connections. In contrast to a passive speaker, the amplifier in an active speaker is built directly into the housing. Active speakers are also usually 2- or 3-way systems, i.e. there is one transducer each for the treble, possibly the mid-range and the bass. High-quality active loudspeakers have a separate amplifier for each transducer as well as a digital signal processor (DSP). This technical design offers decisive advantages:

The audio signal can be transmitted digitally and thus loss-free from the source to the loudspeaker.

The manufacturer of the active loudspeakers can optimally tune the amplifier and transducer to each other, which has a positive effect on the precision and cleanliness of the sound.

The problem of phase shift in multi-way loudspeakers can be effectively corrected by the DSP. This improves the spatiality, timbre and detail of the sound.

In contrast to an analog system, with a fully digital hi-fi system only the speakers have a significant influence on the sound. If you want better sound, simply replace the speakers with better models. It’s as simple as that!
The problem and the solution
Despite the advantages mentioned above, hi-fi systems with active loudspeakers are (still) the exception. There are simple reasons for this:

The connection options are very limited. Unlike an AV receiver or amplifier, active loudspeakers only offer a few inputs.

The connections of active loudspeakers are only designed for stereo signals. Surround sound therefore remains an unattainable dream.
You can solve precisely these problems with the products from hifidom: With a fully digital counterpart to the AV receiver or amplifier. We call this device Digital Signal Controller (DSC).
The best thing about our solution: You can connect all digital active speakers that support the widely used SPDIF standard at the input. This gives you a large selection of great speakers from many brand manufacturers and you can choose exactly the speakers you like best!
Fully digital surround sound
Although you can only feed a stereo signal into the digital connection of the active loudspeakers, you can easily realize fully digital surround sound: Our Digital Signal Controller has 4 outputs, each of which outputs 2 channels. This results in a total of 8 channels. This means you can play everything from stereo to 7.1 surround sound and experience the maximum performance of your hi-fi system in any configuration!
Digital active speakers are usually connected in pairs to the 4 outputs. One speaker of the pair is connected directly to the output, while the second speaker is wired to the first speaker and receives its signal via this connection.
The Digital Sound Controller
Our solution for the Digital Sound Controller (DSC) is a USB sound card. Surprising at first glance! However, this approach actually opens up many new and exciting possibilities, as it allows you to configure your DSC completely freely according to your needs:

Thanks to the USB interface, you can connect the sound card to almost any computer. Most modern operating systems already have the appropriate drivers pre-installed. So you can simply connect the sound card and immediately output the sound digitally via the card. It really is that simple!

More than just a circuit board
Our accessories are just right for your project. For example, you can attach a PCIe slot bracket to the sound card. This makes it very easy to install the card in a PC case.
Most mainboards have a USB3 post connector. With a short USB cable and a suitable adapter, you can easily connect our sound card to the mainboard.
To make ordering easier for you, we have put together the "Multimedia Center" starter kit. This package contains the sound card and all the necessary components for installation in a PC case. This will make your project a success!
